Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel (2006) - ""Young Markus Berres is clearly establishing himself as a major Mosel talent." The Berres "three star" 2006 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese smells of sassafras, Chartreuse-like herbal-floral distillate, and honey. With a subtly creamy yet light and "cool" sorbet-like palate projection (like the corresponding Berres Urziger), this rich, quite sweet Auslese manages to be quite refreshing as well. Nut brittle, cinnamon, grilled pineapple, sassafras, and honey star in its long, pure, ennobled yet still refreshing finish. This, too, will no doubt stand a quarter century in the cellar. "

Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel (2005) - "Tastes like there's a touch of botrytis Lemon candy, spice and marzipan mingle with the sweetness and the lively structure. Almost sweet-tart, like an eiswein, then ends with a mouthwatering tanginess. Very intense. Best from 2009 through 2028. 23 cases made."

Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel (2005) - "[This wine] is a strikingly successful harbinger of things no doubt to come at this estate and a wine well worth a search of the proverbial marketplace and a couple of decades of scrutiny from the safety of your cellar. Smelling of pineapple, lemon candy, sassafras, pear nectar, and nut oils, this wine wafts its way across the palate with invigorating and succulent fresh-fruitedness, faintly oily texture and a marvelous complexity of citrus, sweet herbal, floral, and nut oil nuances. More of the same enticing juiciness, delicacy, and complexity follow on the finish, with the strongest notes being of pear nectar, pineapple, and sassafras. This Riesling's 9.5% alcohol serves as a reminder that young Berres allowed the fermentation to progress further than is typical nowadays for a wine of such high must weight, and he has achieved a wonderful balance: an Auslese not overwhelmingly sweet, yet elegant and buoyant despite its relatively high alcohol. Congratulations are in order! "

Overview: Since 1510 the Berres family has grown and made great Rieslings in the privileged sites of Ürzig, Erden and Wehlen. Markus Berres, 21st generation, succeeded his father Alfred in 2004. Following graduation from the Geisenheim Institute and one year in the New Zealand wine industry, Markus is relaunching his family's nine-acre estate with updated wines and packages, including Stelvin closures on all bottles.

History: The Berres family is recorded to have resided and worked in the vineyards of Ürzig since the year 1510. Markus Berres, 21st generation, has taken the helm of this prestigious Mittel Mosel estate beginning with the 2004 vintage, and is in the process of effecting one of the most significant renaissances in recent German wine history.

Upon secularization of the Mosel by Napoleon, one of the first great private wine estates to be established was that of Peter Nicolay in Ürzig, including the finest sites in Ürzig, Erden, Wehlen, Graach and Zeltingen. Through marriage and inheritance Nicolay became C.H. (Carl Hubert) Berres, which continued to produce and market the estate's great Rieslings under the Peter Nicolay brand until 1986, when the estate was divided upon inheritance.

Carl Hubert's grandson Alfred (father of Markus) retained nearly 10 acres of old, ungrafted Riesling vines in the best sites, including Ürzig's famous Würzgarten and legendary, minuscule Goldwingert, and Erden's Treppchen. While fine wines continued to be made in the original Berres/Nicolay cellars, sales were limited to the local trade, with significant accumulation of great 1990s vintages in the Berres cellars as a result.

Ürzig and Erden are famous for their red slate soils and singular rock outcroppings that retain heat and concentrate the typical herb-spice of the wines. These are the only villages in the Mosel allowed to replant without grafting, as phylloxera was never able to penetrate the rock barriers.

Following graduation from the Geisenheim Institute and experience in the New Zealand wine industry, Markus Berres has approached the 2004 vintage looking enthusiastically to the future, introducing thoroughly modern and intense Rieslings with Stelvin screw cap closures on all bottlings. As a remarkably affordable introduction, Markus has christened his new Estate Riesling from top sites Impulse--symbolic of the renewed energy and optimism at this proud estate.
