Casal Novo Godello (2015) - "Limpid yellow. Lively and sharply focused on the nose, displaying fresh citrus and orchard fruit aromas and subtle floral and dusty mineral flourishes. Shows sharp delineation to its fresh pear, Meyer lemon and peach pit flavors, which deepen slowly on the back half. Lingers with very good tenacity on the finish, featuring subtle honeysuckle and pear nectar qualities. (All stainless steel.)"

Casal Novo Godello (2015) - "Dusty white-fruit aromas lead to a firm palate with fine acidity, minerality and a sense of completeness. Dry slightly spicy apple and peach flavors finish in elegant form. This is everyday Godello at its best, meaning no bells and whistles, just fruit, slate and acidity. "

Casal Novo Godello (2014) - "Vivid straw. A pungent, complex bouquet evokes fresh tangerine, pear and melon, with mineral, fennel and floral nuances building in the glass. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, showing a taut, linear quality to its flavors of bitter citrus pith, pear skin and honeydew. Turns fleshier on the back half, with a subtle floral quality building on the long, mineral-tinged finish."

Casal Novo Godello (2012) - "Godello, a grape indigenous to Valdeorras, a tiny DO in northwestern Spain, has great potential because it has the capacity to make a wine that combines a creamy richness with bold acidity. The trick is to balance the two, as O Casal has done with their 2012 Casal Novo. Its edginess keeps you coming back to savor its mouth filling texture. It will cut through the heartiest of seafood dishes."

Casal Novo Godello (2012) - "Pale yellow. Lemon, chalky minerals and white flowers on the highly perfumed nose, with a gingery nuance adding lift. Dry and precise, offering bitter citrus zest and pear skin flavors that become sweeter with air. Shows real tension on the clinging finish, which leaves notes of dusty minerals and jasmine behind."

Casal Novo Godello (2010) - "Pale yellow. High-pitched aromas of green apple, herbs, lemon pith and minerals. Sappy and powerful, with bitter citrus and nectarine flavors enlivened by zesty acidity and a chalky mineral element. Casal Novo Godello (2009) - "The 2009 Casal Novo Godello offers up a fragrant perfume of peach, melon, nutmeg, and mineral. Round and smooth-textured, on the palate it reveals plenty of savory peach and lemon flavors in a nicely proportioned package. Drink this excellent value over the next 3-4 years. "

Casal Novo Godello (2009) - "Light, bright yellow. Aromatic nose combines subtle pear and citrus notes with crushed rock, spices and jasmine. Juicy and focused in the mouth, with an appealing subtlety to the orange, Anjou pear and mineral flavors. Coats the palate with mineral-tinged citrus and orchard fruit flavors and finishes with gentle bitterness. A touch of heat on the back held down my score but this is extremely easy to like. "

Casal Novo Godello (2008) - "Adega O Casal's 2008 Casal Novo Godello offers up an enticing nose of poached pear, fresh herbs, baking spices, and melon. This leads to a medium-bodied, potentially complex wine with good volume and intense flavors. This lengthy effort is likely to evolve for 1-2 years and can be enjoyed through 2014."

Casal Novo Godello (2008) - "Pale yellow color. Lively citrus and pear skin aromas are complicated by notes of lemon thyme, anise and talc. Firm and juicy, offering zest lime and orange peel flavors and an undercurrent of spicy minerals. Finishes dry, with very good clarity and lingering spiciness. This wine would work well with raw shellfish."

Casal Novo Godello (2007) - "The medium straw-colored 2007 Casal Novo Godello delivers a fragrant savory/spicy bouquet with notes of minerality, melon, and white peach. Layered and round on the palate, it is loaded with succulent white fruits, has vibrant acidity, and a lengthy, pure finish. It will drink well for several years."

Casal Novo Godello (2007) - "Pale, hazy yellow. Fresh lime and melon aromas are deepened by suave leesy and floral honey nuances. Creamy, gently tangy flavors of candied lime and tangelo are leavened by dusty minerals. An intriguing blend of vivacity and depth, finishing with excellent clarity and mineral persistence. This really clings, and there's zero excess fat."

Casal Novo Godello (2007) - "Mineral and stone fruit nose leads to lovely, sweet white nectarine flavors and a long mineral finish; some characteristics of northern Rhône and southern Burgundy. Simple fish preparations."

Overview: Founded in 2000 by five partners sharing the ideal of capturing the true varietal and optimum expression of the indigenous Godello and Mencía grapes. Starting with inherited family plots at high elevation near the village of Rubiá, vineyard area has gradually expanded to the current six hectares (15 acres). Yields are kept low to assure concentration and mineral character.

History: Valdeorras—“Mineral Valley”— has been prized since Roman times for its slate and precious metals, remains an internationally- prominent source of slate for the building industry. The Romans may have taken the gold, but they cultivated the Godello—among the first vitis vinifera grapes to evolve in Spain, and a strong contender with Albariño for top honors among Spanish noble white varieties. Valdeorras is the Galician counterpart to Bierzo in Castilla y León, the two D.O.s separated by the Montes de León and communicated via road tunnels and the gorge of the Sil River. As in Bierzo, Mencía and Godello are the principal quality varieties, but in Valdeorras the more Atlantic climate and lighter soils tip the scales in favor of Godello.

Arriving from Bierzo, the first and highest village in Valdeorras is Rubiá, home of Adega O Casal. Founded in 2000 by five partners (including a former President of the D.O. Valdeorras), a total of eight hectares are planted in small parcels primarily to Godello and Mencía. High elevation and off-south exposures delay maturation, and quality is sought via low yields and sustainable viticulture. Parcels are located on both sides of the Sil River, offering both slate and chalk/clay terroirs. This duality of terroir is expressed in a layered textural/mineral complexity that defines the house style. Casal Novo Godello and Mencía are unoaked in order to feature the wines’ inherent complexity.
