This gorgeous wine demonstrates the greatness of Huguet's gravelly, high-altitude vineyards. Low-pH, dense musts develop slowly on the lees in barriques expressing the rich wood while retaining a distinctly old-world subtlety of fruit.

Can Feixes Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (2007) - "Bright gold. Poached pear and yellow plum on the deeply scented nose and in the mouth. Weighty but there's good energy here as well. Lush and creamy in texture, finishing supple, warm and long, with a jolt of smoky vanillin oak. Drink up. "

Can Feixes Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (2004) - "Outstanding. Medium straw-colored, it offers toasty notes, a supple entry, and crisp green apple and pear flavors with a touch of minerality, fine balance and excellent length. Drink this tasty Chardonnay over the next 12-18 months."

Can Feixes Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (2004) - "The 2007 Can Feixes Chardonnay is a selection of the best parcels, raised entirely in French oak for eight months with regular batonnage. It has a lifted butterscotch and almond-scented bouquet that carries the oak extremely well. The palate is full-bodied with a leesy entry and touches of spice that become more prominent towards the orange rind, hazelnut and nectarine-tinged finish. It offers impressive persistency and freshness, the new oak barely noticeable. Again, this has the substance to merit aging, although it is delicious to drink in its youth. Drink now-2017."

Can Feixes Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (2004) - "Yellow-gold. Buttery pear and apple on the nose, with a brisk lemon zest quality adding energy. Plump and juicy but also brisk, showing a pleasant blend of ripeness and nerve. The lingering finish features a crisp citrus note."

Can Feixes Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (2001) - "Well-executed Chardonnay from the land where Cava reigns, this is lightly oaked with spicy apple and citrus flavors. Catalonia recommendation."

Can Feixes Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (2000) - "Pale lemon-gold color. Exotic, nuanced nose combines pineapple, mango, orange, peach skin, acacia honey and smoky oak; tangy suggestions of noble rot. Then concentrated and exotic but vibrant and bracing; an electric fruit bomb in the mouth, with rich flavors of ripe pineapple, pear, apricot and mango."

Can Feixes Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (1999) - "Sexy aromas of roasted apple, nutmeg, cinnamon and smoky oak. Fat and dense, with harmonious ripe acidity lifting and clarifying the apple, lemon and mint flavors. This has excellent depth of fruit and length."

Overview: Estate founded in 1768 by Don Jaime Feixes and acquired from Feixes descendants by the Huguet family in the late-19th century. Unchanged in boundary since its original founding, Can Feixes is over 1,000 acres of mountainside terrain, the highest vineyard estate in the region at over 1,400 feet.

History: The historic Can Feixes estate is situated on gravelly slopes above the 400-meter level in an amphitheater at the tree line near the famous Montserrat pinnacle, which forms Penedès' northern boundary. The farthest Penedès vineyard from the Mediterranean, temperature variation here is more Continental in its extremes, the drier climate more conducive to grape health. The altitude and mountain terrain constitute the tiny viticultural home of the Parellada variety, locally known as Montonec ("grape of the mountain"). Recognized as the region's Grand Cru, Can Feixes sells the majority of its grapes and a large portion of the fermented wines as well. Only the best grapes, and subsequently the best wines, are kept for production under the family label. Total vineyard area of approximately 120 hectares (300 acres) is planted to Parellada (Montonec), Macabeo, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, and Cabernet, with small amounts of Pinot Noir. Vineyard plantation at Can Feixes is documented back to the year 1400, registered by Sr. Jaume Feixes. The estate has continuously produced wine since 1690, the Huguet family acquiring the property following an interruption in descendency at the turn of the 20th century. Today's modern bodega includes subterranean aging cellars with pupitres for manual riddling of the Huguet Brut, bottle storage and oak cooperage for the aging of red wine. Viticulture and enology are handled respectively by brothers Joan and Josep María Huguet. Only free-run must from rigorously selected grapes is used. Bottled production averages 6,000 cases per year depending on vintage, including a fragrant, firm and minerally dry white (Can Feixes Blanc Selecció) and superb CAVA.
